Reluctance

Last year, you were by my side
when all I wanted was to run
blindly into the traffic
(not wanting to live) and not answer
your phone calls and let go
of the emptiness, of broken things
I know I cannot fix.

This year, I am with you still
when all you need is something tangible
to hold on to: your home, your job,
even my hand I am willing to hold out
for you if you would just let me
do those little things for you
like making dinner
or kissing every part
of your worried face
because I know you would
do the same for me.

down the aisles
as we shop for necessities...
your reluctance changes
to 25% off
