string cheese-looking clouds and contrails... even cornered old cobwebs studded with crumbling corpses

Today is sugar-glazed cashews sandwiched between rice crackers sprinkled with a bit of sesame seeds all imported from Vietnam. Each bite is a crunch louder than when one eats cereal. Like the crunch of twigs and hardy leaves underfoot. Even the crunch holds a mystery of soldiers stepping onto land mines before they explode bit by bit like stars... Today, I am the first generation of Vietnamese-Americans holding those stars of memories, of dreams, of freedom.

A beautiful series of images tantalising the senses!
ReplyDeleteWhen America left South Vietnam, the Communists tortured, killed or sent those who'd supported the U.S. to re-education camps. I won't gross you out with this aftermath, as it would make you sick. When Vietnamese fled their country their path was a nightmare: pirates stole killed and raped the boat people. Boats were overcrowded and I'll equipped to travel far in the ocean. Many died in the boats. The human waste and stench was ghastly. Survivors oftentimes were sent to relocation camps in Thailand and other countries until they could find someone to sponsor them in Another country. Those who were sent to Camp Pendleton, CA were fed slop. Once sponsored, the towns they lived in were prejudiced and sometimes hateful. The Vietnamese living in the US today are wonderful people. they are my heroes.
